How did the Grand Maester die in Game of Thrones? Who killed the Grand Maester?

One horrible murder scene at the conclusion of Game of Thrones — the execution of Maester Pycelle at the hands of Qyburn’s — formerly Varys’ — tiny birds — was extremely satisfying for both book readers and program viewers.

Varys refers to his network of spies, who are typically orphaned street children, as “little birds” in both the books and the program. Qyburn usurps his network of spies in the capital, as well as his role as Master of Whisperers on the small council in King’s Landing after he departs for Meereen.

We previously saw him treat the children sweetly in order to gain their trust, as well as provide them, sweets, in exchange for their whispers and spying in season six, episode three, “Oathbreaker.”

How did the Grand Maester die in ‘Game of Thrones’?

When Cersei enters the cellar to talk with Qyburn, she notices that the children are all Varys’ old spies. Qyburn corrects her, “Your little birds now, your Grace,” much to Cersei’s delight. She instructs him to continue developing the spy network throughout the seven kingdoms.

In episode 10, Maester Pycelle follows one of the little birds down to Qyburn’s cellar, ostensibly assuming that King Tommen is down there seeking his advice. However, Qyburn is the only one down there, along with the youngsters.

“Whatever your faults, you don’t deserve to die alone in such a cold, dark place,” Qyburn says to Pycelle. “And sometimes, before we can usher in the new, we must put the old to rest.”

The small birds then descend on Pycelle, slicing him to death with knives and stabbing him repeatedly while Qyburn looks on – a gruesome sequence involving children, but this is, after all, “Game of Thrones.”
