Irene Cara Escalera was a singer and actress from the United States and rose to notoriety in 1980 for her part as Coco Hernandez in the musical film Fame, as well as for releasing the title song “Fame,” which reached number one in multiple countries.

Irene Cara performed and co-wrote “Flashdance… What a Feeling” (from the film Flashdance) in 1983, for which she received an Academy Award for Best Original Song and a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 1984. Prior to her fame with Fame, Cara starred in the original 1976 musical drama film Sparkle as the title character Sparkle Williams.

Irene Cara has starred in a number of Broadway and off-Broadway productions, including the musicals, Ain’t Misbehavin’, The Me Nobody Knows (for which she received an Obie Award), Maggie Flynn alongside Shirley Jones and Jack Cassidy, and Via Galactica with Ral Juliá.
